As part of our Thanksgiving meal this year, we had homemade applesauce. My sister-in-law and mother-in-law made it and BOY was it DELICIOUS! They gave me a rundown of the ingredients, so when I got home I made my own version.
Ingredients:
- 4 lb bag of Honey Crisp Apples
- 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
- 2 Tbs. honey
- 1/2 C Apple Cider
- 2 Tbs. cinnamon
- 3-4 Tbs. of butter
Slice and peel and the apples (approx. 8-9 apples) then put them in a roasting pan or dutch oven.
Add all the other ingredients in the pot and cover, then put it in the oven on 475 degrees for about 45 minutes.
Stir about halfway through. The apples are done when they are soft.
Scoop out just the apples and either mash by hand or use a food processor to make it into a sauce.
(The leftover juice in the bottom of the pot is good drizzled over oatmeal! 😉 )
This recipe makes about 32 oz or 4 Cups and it tastes just like apple pie!! 🙂

Can this applesauce be frozen?
Angela says
I have never frozen it but I’m sure you could! 🙂
Kevin says
I’ve never frozen, I always can applesauce in mason jars. 20 minutes in boiling water-bath for pints or 25 minutes for quarts.

Wish I could have just printed the recipe! 🙁
Angela says
Betty, sorry I just updated the recipe with a printable. 🙂

Thanks for this recipe! It turned out delicious and I will use again but next time, I may cut the cinnamon down to 1 Tbs. I personally love the taste as it is but I could see where the cinnamon might be overpowering for some. On that note, I’m in Atlanta, GA and this is going to be our first frost and weekend with cooler temps. Again, thanks for the recipe and perfect timing. 🙂

The printable recipe does not include the oven temperature or time. I know it’s in the post above, but it would be helpful to see it in the recipe itself.

This applesauce recipe is a must try. The roasted method brings out incredible flavors and the hint of honey takes it to the next level. Definitely making it a regular in my kitchen.
