I wanted to change the look of my outdoor furniture, but did not want to have to make new cushions. I thought of a slip cover and using a painter’s drop cloth. I bought a 9×12 drop cloth, I got it on sale for $14.99…LOTS of fabric for not a lot!
I draped it over the love seat I was working with and cut a slit where I needed it and “ripped” down the side. This made the cut straight, without having to try to get it just right.
This is how the “rip” will look.
To make the front skirt, I used two pleats. I measured the center and then put the pleats on the center of each side.
I just eye-balled the the pleats. Here is how it should look.
Once you figure out where you want the pleats, pin it on inside out.
To make the ties. I cut a long strip, about 5″, and sewed the edges.
Then I went back to the love seat and pinned one strap on the top and one right above the seat.
To fasten each tie, I used Velcro.
I wanted to make it a little more interesting, so I made a stencil. Our last name is Lerew, so I decided to use an “L” but you could use any design.
To make the stencil, I drew it out on cardboard and used an exacto knife to cut it out.
I used fabric paint to transfer the monogram and make a stripe along the back.
I just used painters tape to make the stripe.
And here’s the finished slip cover! I love it with my new coffee table!

your slip cover turned out very nicely, I like that you added the pleats, it is a nice touch.
I also like the chandelier! and your “coffee” table is great, it makes for a very inviting place.
It makes me want to update my outdoor….if only we were not moving soon!

Love it! Great update and tutorial. I’m still trying to decide what type of sewing machine I want to buy. Any suggestions?

This is awesome; I never thought of making a slip cover out of a drop cloth, but it looks wonderful! Nice way to change up the look for cheap!
