I don’t really take Valentine’s Day too seriously. I mean I “love” the idea behind it but, in all honesty, my husband and I have never really celebrated it. On the other hand, I do think it gives me an opportunity to love on people “just because” and make fun crafts to share! 😉
So this weekend my girls and I worked on a fun treat. We made little heart cakes, the fancy word for these are petit fours. I think they actually turned out really well but used a few tricks to make the process a little quicker and easier.
First off, I used a store bought cake mix and icing (for the filling). For the cake, I used the largest cake pan I had. (The cake needs to be as thin as possible.) I didn’t want the cake to stick and be easily removed, so I lined the pan with parchment paper and filled it with warm/hot water. This step just helped form the paper to the pan. Dump the water right before you are ready to pour in the batter and pat it with a towel to get any of the excess water off.
After the cake cooked, I was able to just pull the parchment paper out without any sticking.
I cut the cake in half and generously iced one side, then placed the other piece on top.
I used a heart cookie cutter to cut each cake. You will need to “rock” the cutter slightly so the first layer of the cake doesn’t break.
For the icing, I used this glaze recipe and set them on a cooling rack so the excess didn’t pool around the cake.
For the arrows, you will need: printable, glue stick and two toothpicks per cake
{Click on the image below for the FREE DOWNLOAD!}
You will need 2 hearts and 2 chevrons for each cake. Cut out the shapes then glue two of the same shape around a toothpick.
The point of the heart should face out for the point of the point of the arrow and the chevron point should face in. In the below picture the chevron is backward, sorry!
The arrow should look the photo below.
Once you have all the toothpicks assembled, just stick them in the cakes and you’re don!
These are the perfect treat for a Valentine party or cute little tea party. (In our case we drink juice, but we always use dainty teacups! 😉 )
If you don’t have the time or patience to make the mini cakes, you can just by the Little Debbie heart cakes from the store! It would make this a 5-minute project! (Truth is that was my original plan, but all the stores were sold out of them here.)
I hope you all have a SWEET day!
