OK so when I have a vision, my family can’t always see. {By family, in this case, I mean my husband and parents} Everyone thought I was CR-AZY when I brought an old entrainment center home. My mom even offered to pay me to bring it back!
BUT, hopefully they feel differently now…the jury is still out because none of them have see it finished until now.
Here’s the before and after. I would say it’s much better, what do you think??
I removed the top doors and all the “guts” in the upper section. I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk paint (TM) in Old Ocher and Paris Grey then distressed it. I then reattached some of the existing supports and cut some shelves to fit.
All of that was the easy part!! Styling the shelves was a bit of a challenge for me.
The shelves are all very wide, so there was a lot of space to “fill.” I started by gathering up things from around the house that I thought would all work together. Books were a given.
Then I just played around with the height and depth of all the items. Adding books or other objects to raise objects for more dimension.
The basket on top was previously used a side table for couch, but adds even more height and texture.

You did a great job painting it AND a great job with your vignettes. I’d say it’s a success all the way around.

Hi Angela. It looks really great! Did you not have to sand this first to get the chalk paint to go on well and stick?
Jody
Angela says
Nope! That’s the great thing about chalk paint…no sanding or priming! 🙂

I have an entertainment center very much like this I want to paint and distress. What did you do to prep it? Remove wax? Prime it with anything first? I am concerned that the furniture polish used over time to clean this piece will keep the paint from adhering. Any tips? I am not planning to use chalk paint. Thanks! BTW Beautiful piece. Hope mine looks this good when it is done. Donna
Angela says
Donna, I didn’t do any prep work for this piece, that is why chalk paint is so great! If you are going to be using latex paint, I would give it a good cleaning and either sand or use liquid sand (you can find it at most hardware stores). Then either use a primer or a paint that already has primer. Good luck! 🙂

Could you tell me how you distressed the TV stand once you painted it with chalk paint? I’m ready to do this with my book shelves mantle which surround my brick fireplace. Thanks!
Angela says
Steph, I just used a sanding pad and lightly sanded the corners. 🙂
Kathleen Petersen says
Hi there,
I see that you used two different colors here. Which one did you do first? Or did you mix them?
Also, does this need a finishing coat of some sort on top?
Thanks!!!
Angela says
Hi, Kathleen! It doesn’t matter the order of the paint, but it depends on how you want it took. The two colors are just to give it some dimension. If the piece you are painting is used often then you will want to put a clear wax coat over it. However, if it is seldom used you could probably skip it.
Kathleen Petersen says
Perfect thank you! I want mine to look just like your so did you paint the white or grey first? And how many coats?
Thanks!

Angela, I love how you transformed that old entertainment center into beautiful bookshelves! It’s amazing how you saw the potential when others couldn’t especially with the chalk paint and distressing technique you used. The mix of books and household items adds such a personal touch and depth to the space. I am a busy student, and I need the proper atmosphere in my house.
