I absolutely LOVE this time of year! I look forward to filling my house with the smell of pine and all that sparkles. I have collected a lot of Christmas decor over the years and have had my share of bad decor decisions, but I think I’ve finally hit my groove. I know what I like and what works. I’m learning to pair down on the things I store and just keep the things I love.
HOWEVER, I don’t like my house to look the exact same every year. After all, I am a blogger and how much fun would it be to see the same holiday house photos every year?!? 😉 So I try to use the things I already have and rearrange them in a way that makes it “feel” new.
A good example is my large letters that spell out the word “HOPE”. Last year I put them on wall like this:
This year I moved them above the fireplace and spray painted them for a whole new look.
Another way to use the things you already have is with pictures and artwork. A simple print out and some washi tape is all you need! Just tape the print on the glass of your existing artwork. {You can a free downloadable copy of this print, HERE.}
The part about not buying anything new is mostly true, expect for the fact that I’ve started buying some artificial greenery. (AND vintage ornaments are a bit of a weakness…thankfully they don’t sell them in the stores!)
I normally buy fresh garland and wreaths every year but it can get expensive and of course doesn’t last. Some of the artificial stuff looks so real that you can’t tell the difference! I found some beautiful garland and a wreath from Kmart. Sandra Lee and Jaclyn Smith have two amazing holiday décor collections and I had a little trouble sticking to my rule! 😉
{This is the Trim A Home® Richardson Long Needle Garland with Pinecones.}
I love this Sandra Lee Winter Radiance Pinecone Wreath. It has such a great mixture of texture and can stay up all winter.
I added a sparkly “Merry Christmas” that can be easily taken off later this month.

I too love decorating with fresh greens–the smell… Your house is lovely and that VW bug is so cute! I didn’t even know Kmart had those lines. I will need to check them out. This year is a bit different for me as little one and I moved into a smaller cottage–paring down and seeing what works this year! its almost stressful 🙂

Kristen, I think you will be glad once you can get your things pared down. I am really trying to simplify my decor this year!
